I was thinking about having ridden a Road King under thosse red rocks. The visual impact of leaving las vegas is only matched by a memory of arriving in Salt Lake City on a Greyhound when I was 18. The rising sun had caught the the orange desert and set it on fire... all of salt lake city was shaded by the mountains and still in darkness. lights flickering.
There is a little of that idea in this picture.

On the edge of the desert, the dawn rolled in on the little Circus. Crisp and cold. Max rolled himself a cigarette and pondered his tiny troupe. The strong man, Bernard the Beast, was not so big and not so strong. "I'm to old for this" he grumbled, nursing his back. Mara, the bearded lady, though she moved with beauty and grace, was clearly a man. The Fearless Freemonts, identical twins, were more and more afraid and argued incessantly. Todd the torch had given up smoking and was unapproachable as of late. Willy the Wolfman was in love with two woman and howled late into the night. There on the edge of the desert Marvellous Max rolled himself another cigarette. And pondered.

This is the final illustration I did for a tutorial in DigitalArtist number 34. It was done in procreate on my iPad. It was inspired by my recent discovery of the incredible story of Kowloon Walled City in the no man's land between Hong Kong and China. The crowded city grew randomly inside the walls of an ancient fort. Though it was autonomously governed by triads, and the economy was ostensibly based on drugs and prostitution, it is said that the occupants lived mostly in harmony. Incredible given that Inside the walls 6 acres the population swelled to almost 40,000 inhabitants. In 1993 the Chinese evicted the occupants and demolished it to make a park in 1994.

I started to think of Kowloon Walled City as a "proof of concept" for the future and got to wondering how many Kowloons the future will hold for us, however technological we become. But of course, Ridley Scott got there well before me, Kowloon Walled City Was an inspiration for the film Bladerunner.

I painted the June cover of the Italian monthly Monsieur on my ipad3. Monsieur is an attractive high end magazine produced by the Swan Group and dedicated to culture, social comment and the finer things in life.

The cover represents the Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci from whence the Americas got their name.

The cover was digitally fingerpainted in procreate app and then textured in ArtRage.

I believe that it is the first Italian monthly done on the iPad.

From a take on the black and white films of the early 1900’s to the digital age, it is a surprising mix of tradition and innovation: engaging and emotion-filled. An elegant contrast depicting the eternal struggle between experience and experimentation; this is the Simonetta fashion show.

Irony lives in the similarities and plays on meaning. Sensitive, Simonetta pushes past the limits and yet again rises above the subtle distinction between fashion and art. This time, the most contemporary luxury childrenswear meets Pitti Bimbo, inspired by the iArt of Matthew Watkins, pioneer of fingerpainting, in a mobile version on iPad.

The live performance and true sensory experience make this runway even more special and impressive. The music reinforces the video projected on the background which shows what new surprise is taking shape on Mr. Watkins tablet in real time, accompanying the children step by step along the runway.

The screen displays graphic lines and elements inspired by the collection. Bold colour combinations and details define limitless space; it is like a child’s game, without rules. The runway exhibits proposals for Spring/Summer 2012 dedicated to the child’s world; it is the fruit of unparallel creativity and unique wisdom, able to reinvent itself over and over.

Just as the Simonetta Collection breaks with tradition without negating it, so too, Watkins welcomes innovation that allows him to return to self expression without constraints. For this reason, he has revolutionized the concept of “getting your hands dirty”, providing the same freedom with an immediate, simple and hi-tech tool which makes it easy to finger paint.

For Watkins, every action is legitimate. He often prefers to go back and delete every trace and start from scratch. So, the final outcome is surprising: like the magic of the Simonetta Collection.
