The Crossing

The Crossing
Originally uploaded by Matthew Watkins

A coffee cup, tape, some thread, a broken souvlaki stick.

Spirits were high and sailing was smooth and slow, but soon enough the wind picked up.

The waves grew tall. The little cup was tossed from crest to crest, to
and fro.

Topper mouse called land ho! And they rejoiced. But the sea soon turned dark and a great vortex opened under their little cup.

Fingerpainted on my iphone and based on "Becuma of the white skin" of

illustration.

"In a forked glen into which he slipped at night-fall he was
surrounded by giant toads".

I drew this also on the beach. Within 5 minutes the mirror flat sea had turned into a frothing wasteland. Three swimmers had to be rescued from the buoy where they were holding on for dear life. Rubber ducky sought safety in a tidal pool.

As a child I was facinated with the illustrations of Rackham and Dulac. Often I had never read the stories that they illustrated, so i would try to imagine a plot based on the illustration. This inspired me to draw my own illustrations alluding to a story which didnt actually exist. Funny that i still do this.

Topoletto
Cooool. What's that do?

Maestro
It's going to use an electromagnetic field to comunicate the harmonic disturbance created by the strings to an amplifiying device.

Topletto
huh?

Maestro
I am going to make it louder.

Topeletto
But maestro, i'ts already loud. Even though you play magnificently of course, it's already very loud.

Maestro
Louder. One violin will play like a 1000 screaming beasts from the Netherworld.

Topeletto
Maestro, you scare me.
